The Reinstatement Fee Payment Window
You received notice that your Massachusetts driver's license is suspended.
The reinstatement process in Massachusetts operates differently than in many states. You cannot pay the fee online. You cannot pay it early to speed up reinstatement. The fee is due only after your suspension period has ended, and payment must happen in person at a select RMV hearing site with proof of current insurance in hand or your license remains suspended even after you pay.

This fee applies whether your suspension lasted 30 days or six months, and it is separate from any fines or penalties assessed for the underlying violation.

What the Fee Actually Covers
It does not reduce any court fines, traffic penalties, or insurance surcharges tied to the violation that caused your suspension. It is not a fine. It is the cost the RMV assesses to restore your driving privilege after the suspension period has been served.
The fee covers only the reinstatement itself. If your suspension was triggered by an insurance lapse, you still owe proof of a new policy. If it was triggered by unpaid violations, those must be cleared separately before the RMV will accept your reinstatement payment.
Many drivers assume paying the fee online or mailing a check will resolve the suspension. Massachusetts does not accept either. The RMV requires in-person payment at a hearing site, and the payment must be accompanied by documentation proving you have resolved the underlying cause of the suspension.
You cannot pay the reinstatement fee until your suspension period has ended, and payment without proof of current insurance leaves your license suspended even after you pay.
Where and How to Pay the Fee

You must pay in person at one of the RMV hearing sites that process reinstatement cases. These are not the same as standard service centers. The RMV website lists the hearing locations by region. Call ahead to confirm the site handles reinstatement payments and to verify current hours, because hearing sites operate on limited schedules and some require appointments.
The RMV accepts cash, money order, or certified check at most hearing sites. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted at all locations.
Timing the Payment Correctly
The RMV will not accept your reinstatement fee payment before your suspension period has ended. If your suspension runs through March 15 and you appear at the hearing site on March 10 with payment and documentation, the RMV will turn you away. The suspension must expire first.
Once the suspension period ends, you can pay immediately. There is no grace period. Your license remains suspended until you complete the reinstatement process, which means paying the fee and providing proof of insurance. Driving on a suspended license during this window carries criminal penalties, even if you have already paid the fee but have not yet received confirmation that your license is reinstated.
After you pay, the RMV processes the reinstatement within one to three business days. You will not leave the hearing site with a valid license in hand. The RMV updates your record electronically, and you can verify reinstatement status online through the RMV's license status portal or by calling the contact center. Do not drive until you confirm your license shows as active in the RMV system.
Massachusetts Insurers Writing Policies
12 carriers
Twelve carriers write auto insurance policies in Massachusetts for drivers reinstating after suspension. Most require proof of reinstatement before binding a new policy, so secure a quote and policy commitment before paying the fee, then bring the insurance card to the hearing site.
What Happens If You Pay Without Insurance Proof
The RMV requires proof of current insurance at the time you pay the reinstatement fee. If you arrive at the hearing site with payment but no insurance card or policy declaration showing active coverage, the RMV will not process your reinstatement.
This creates a procedural trap. You cannot reinstate without insurance. Many carriers will not issue a policy to a driver whose license is currently suspended. The solution is to secure a policy commitment from a carrier that writes policies for drivers with suspensions, obtain the insurance card or declaration page, and bring both the payment and the proof of insurance to the hearing site on the same visit. Carriers that write non-standard and after-suspension policies in Massachusetts include Bristol West, Geico, National General, Progressive, and USAA.
Pay the Fee After Suspension Ends With Insurance Proof
The reinstatement process is a single in-person transaction. Your suspension period must be complete. You must have proof of current Massachusetts auto insurance that meets state minimums. All three conditions must be met in one visit, or your license remains suspended.
Verify your suspension end date through the RMV's online portal or by calling the contact center before you schedule your hearing site visit. Secure an insurance policy from a carrier that writes policies for drivers reinstating after suspension. Confirm the hearing site location, hours, and accepted payment methods. Bring your suspension notice, photo ID, insurance proof, and payment. After the RMV processes your reinstatement, confirm your license status online before you drive.
